Palace Hotel Birkdale

Birkdale Palace

Birkdale was a separate borough when the Palace Hotel opened in I866. It had an inauspicious begining, the architect committed suicide by jumping from the roof on discovering it had been built facing inland when it should have faced the sea. In May 19l9 the Palace inaugurated an air service to bring patrons to the establishment on flights between Blackpool and the hotel aviation ground. The Hotel also had its own railway Station, which closed in 1952. Prior to the hotel being demolished in 1969 there were many reports of the architect's ghost wandering over the stone floors and travelling in the lift .
